Salacca zalacca var. amboinensis ‘Gula Pasir’. Widely believed to be the best tasting sweet salak, Gula Pasir translates to ‘Sugar Sand’. Bali Salak palms do not require pollination at all unlike other salaks, the seeds are believed to be clonal (apomictic) and this variety is grown from seed for production in Bali. Bali salak are considered smaller and easier to manage than both Thai Salak and Java Salak (Pondoh) but still require work to prune the old leaves and get rid of any suckers. The palms are spikey but worth the effort for the fruit they produce. Still very rare in Australia.
